Josh Brolin is confirming that, if you can believe it, “Sicario 3” has been greenlit and is coming soon.
Brolin, who played a CIA officer in both “Sicario” and “Sicario: Day of the Soldado,” confirmed in a new interview with ScreenRant that the third instalment “is happening.” He also suggested that production will begin “soon.”
This is a significant update for a project that has been stuck in development for years, and comes roughly a year after Brolin said “Sicario 3” was a maybe.
However, at the time, he was unsure who would direct the threequel. Denis Villeneuve, who directed the first film, is probably too busy with James Bond, while Stefano Sollima, who helmed the second, received mixed reactions for his work on the film. It also remains unclear who ultimately has writing duties, particularly as Taylor Sheridan is busy with all the TV shows he’s creating at the moment.
Most intriguing, producer Molly Smith previously revealed that Christopher McQuarrie was involved as “a partner” on the project, although his exact role was never clarified. McQuarrie has since taken on several other projects, but maybe he wrote the script?
Casting will also be closely watched. Benicio del Toro’s character survived “Soldado,” which means he might be back. Emily Blunt, who was not part of the sequel, could make a return. There’s just a lot of uncertainty surrounding the whole thing, and yet Brolin says it’s definitely happening and moving towards production.
The third instalment, often referred to as “Sicario: Capos,” has been in the works since around 2018. Two years ago, producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee confirmed that a script was partially written before being paused due to the WGA strike, and the idea was “awesome.”
Quite honestly, what’s the point of making another “Sicario” without Villeneuve? He elevated the original with his direction and Roger Deakins’ stunning cinematography. That atmosphere cannot be replicated without them. Time to lay this entire project to rest.
