David Robert Mitchell’s “The End of Oak Street” is freefalling. The well-reviewed movie is looking at a 60% dip in its second weekend, so around $7–8M. The budget was $80M.
A real shame since, as far as I’m concerned, this is the best dinosaur movie since 1993’s “Jurassic Park,” and that’s despite a puzzling ending, which had me scratching my head. No matter, this film further proves how good of a filmmaker Mitchell is — an expert at atmospheric horror, and this film certainly stretches its PG-13 rating to the very limit.
The big wide release this weekend is “Insidious: Out of the Further,” backed by Sony and Blumhouse. This is the sixth ‘Insidious’ movie, and since they are made cheaply, ‘Out of the Further’ cost only $18M. It won’t be the last.
All this to say, ‘Out of the Further’ made $3M in Thursday previews, which is under the $5M in previews for the franchise’s previous chapter, “Insidious: Red Door,” which ended up with a $33M opening weekend in July 2023. ‘Out of the Further’ is looking at a $25M weekend in 3,300 theaters.
Listen, it’s not surprising that critics aren’t wild about ‘Out of the Further,’ which sits at 58% on Rotten Tomatoes; at least that’s better than the previous film, ‘Red Door,’ at 40%. I checked out of this franchise after the second film — these movies are primarily aimed at horror fans who want a familiar, reliable scare machine rather than anything original.
This all means that “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” with $5.5M on Thursday, is expected to make around $37M in its fourth weekend, maintaining the #1 spot. And it does look like it will continue to reign atop the box office until “Practical Magic,” which is tracking at a $40M opening, comes out on September 11. Same goes for “The Odyssey,” which made $3.2M on Thursday and looks likely to maintain the #2 spot.
As for the leak-ridden, Jason Statham-starring R-rated “Mutiny,” it could only muster $700K on Thursday in 2,700+ theaters. I’d venture to guess that this $50M movie will open with around $6M, maybe less? Let the lawsuits begin.
