MPA Ratings: ‘The Dog Stars’ and ‘Backrooms’ Rated R; ‘Disclosure Day’ Gets PG-13

April 29, 2026 Jordan Ruimy

The MPA has unveiled its latest batch of ratings, and a pair of high-profile titles are seemingly done with post-production work.

Ridley Scott’s adaptation of “The Dog Stars” has officially been stamped with an R rating for strong violence, signaling a visceral take on Peter Heller’s post-apocalyptic novel. Scott’s recent output, “Gladiator II” and “Napoleon,” has leaned into large-scale brutality, so the filmmaker isn’t holding back on this one either.

Also of note is Kane Parsons’ “Backrooms,” the internet-born horror project produced by A24 that has steadily been gaining buzz. The film has also been rated R for some violent content and bloody images, a slightly milder designation than Scott’s feature but one that still points to unsettling and graphic material.

Some of the other titles now ready with an MPA stamp include Steven Spielberg’s “Disclosure Day,” which received a PG-13 rating — Universal has yet to disclose the film’s production budget. Rounding out the MPA slate are Lena Dunham’s “Good Sex” (R), Guy Ritchie’s “In the Grey” (R), and Michael Showalter’s “Verity” (R).
