Earlier this year, Zack Snyder mentioned having seen James Gunn’s “Superman.” Heaping praise on it. Now he’s saying he actually hasn’t caught up with it yet?
The admission comes in a new THR interview published ahead of the TIFF world premiere of Snyder's "The Last Photograph," his first film made independently, without a studio or streamer behind it.
Asked about Gunn's film, Snyder says, "I just haven't gotten around to it yet," but does add that he supports Gunn and wants DC Studios to succeed.
What complicates the timeline is a "Happy Sad Confused" appearance earlier this year that was widely written up as Snyder is asked what he thought when he saw it, calling the film “amazing,” praising Gunn’s take as “singular,” and how he “can’t wait to watch the next movie.”
In the same THR chat, Snyder addresses the broader competitive question, comparing Marvel's approach to a “theme-park ride” of highs and drops and saying he had no interest in building that. He concedes it may have been a mistake, but says it isn't how he thinks.
Of course, none of this suggests a rift. Gunn consulted Snyder on the Superman suit design, and the two played versions of themselves in a "Rick and Morty" episode last year, trading jabs about their respective takes on the character.
In the meantime, Snyder is at TIFF where he will premiere his Jungle-set indie “The Last Photograph” tomorrow night at 6pm. I’ll be seeing Jesse Eisenberg’s “The Debut” instead during that time, but reviews should be fun to read afterwards. There are still tickets available for Snyder’s film which is showing just a single time at the fest, with no press screening planned.
As expected, Snyder's latest is being torn apart by TIFF attendees. No mercy given. The film, which had its world premiere this evening, is being called by some one of the worst movies to ever premiere at the festival.
