A24 isn't being subtle. This Friday, "You Can See Everything" will expand to roughly 600 additional theaters, bringing it to 3,243 screens nationwide. That's a studio going after the top spot at the box office.
Two weeks ago, this was a nearly three-hour documentary about Elizabeth Holmes playing in 855 theaters. Now it's set to be on as many screens as most superhero movies. The film earned $19.5M in its second weekend, roughly 25% more than its $15.6M opening. It's now at around $50M domestic, making it the third non-concert documentary ever to reach that milestone.
Word of mouth on this "documentary" has been relentless, and every expansion so far has paid off. If Fielder and Oppenheim's film ends up #1 on Sunday, it will be quite the feat. The last non-music documentary to reach #1 at the box office was Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11," which did it way back in 2004.
As it stands, only "Clayface" might keep "You Can See Everything" from first place. The DCU movie opened at the top of the box office with an estimated $24M. It's a horror movie in its second weekend that could benefit from Halloween falling on Saturday, and with no big new wide release expected this weekend, it looks like it will again be a fight between Fielder and "Clayface."
