Marvel's "Blade" has burned through so many directors, writers, drafts and release dates over the past six years that keeping track of which version was has become its own industry.
Bassim Tariq was the first one in the chair. The "Mogul Mowgli" director spent two years building out the Mahershala Ali vehicle before exiting in 2022, and he's now letting the air out on this one.
Tariq tells TheWrap that the film had gotten much further along than its collapse might suggest. He'd relocated his family to Atlanta for the shoot. Ruth E. Carter was already deep into the period wardrobe. Carter reportedly carried unused "Blade" pieces over to Ryan Coogler's "Sinners," the 1930s vampire smash she designed afterward.
On what it's actually like directing inside Marvel Studios, Tariq was …measured. He described a system he enjoyed being part of while never forgetting whose house it was — you're operating on someone else's clock, he said, and that changes the job.

Last year, a Wall Street Journal investigative piece had Marvel Stydios boss Kevin Feige playing a central role in shaping each film, deeply involved in the creative process—frequently stepping in to rework scenes or add new ones when needed. He “deployed lower-ranking executives to supervise shooting, then got his hands dirty again in the editing room, often making significant changes and ordering new scenes.”
Feige’s longtime deputy, Louis D’Esposito, had a recurring joke: “We can fix any movie if we shoot it again.”
This more or less correlates with a previous report that tackled Feige’s obsessive nature in controlling every part of the creative process, to the point where directors are barely in control of directing MCU movies, and with Feige dictating all the shots.
Kevin doesn’t have directors, writers, and visual effects artists figuring into the calculus.
Back in March 2023, former Marvel exec Victoria Alonso berated an unnamed Marvel director on-set, saying that “they don't direct the movies, we direct the movies.' Meaning, the filmmakers we hire don't have creative control over the look or feel of the films.
In the meantime. Tariq and Ali, just went ahead and made something else. "Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother,” an action thriller that puts Ali’s Blade physical to good use. The film screened for press this morning at TIFF. I’ll have some thoughts when the embargo breaks later this evening.
