A listing on Production Weekly indicates that Claudio Miranda, the Oscar-winning cinematographer of “Life of Pi,” has signed on as director of photography for Joseph Kosinski’s “Miami Vice ‘85.”
Not a big surprise. Miranda has shot several of Kosinski’s recent films, most notably “Only the Brave,” “Top Gun: Maverick,” and “F1.” He also recently served as cinematographer on Shawn Levy’s “Star Wars: Starfighter,” which is set to open in theaters on May 28, 2027.
Miranda, who also earned an Oscar nomination for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” has become one of Hollywood’s go-to DPs for large-scale, visually ambitious projects. His career has clearly been on the rise, and “Miami Vice ‘85,” reportedly being shot on IMAX, is expected to continue that trajectory.
As confirmed on Wednesday, Universal is moving forward with “Miami Vice ’85,” starring Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler as Tubbs and Crockett, set for release on August 6, 2027. The film reimagines the neon-lit world of 1980s Miami, with a script by Dan Gilroy and production expected to begin in summer 2026.
