Zach Cregger Distances Himself From ‘Gladys’ Prequel, Not Writing or Directing, Only Producing

Zach Cregger is clarifying his role with “Gladys,” the “Weapons” spin-off that was announced soon after the film topped the box office in August 2025.

Originally, Cregger was reported to be directing “Gladys.” He then dropped out. He was also supposed to co-write the script with Zach Shields (‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’), and apparently now he isn’t.

Speaking with Deadline, Cregger confirmed he’s not writing “Gladys” anymore, only Shields.

Oh, actually, Zach Shields is writing ‘Gladys.’ I was developing the story with him, but he’s writing it.

Warner Bros. has not announced who will direct, but it won’t be Cregger, especially since his actual next film, after “Resident Evil,” the Spielberg-produced “The Flood,” opens a month earlier. Maybe Shields will helm “Gladys.”

Here’s my theory on this, and I could obviously be completely wrong: Netflix originally acquired “The Flood,” which I hear is a mighty expensive film to produce, only to back away after refusing to meet Cregger’s demand for a theatrical release..

Many months later, “Gladys” was announced at Warner Bros., and just a few weeks after that, Warners picked up “The Flood.” At this point, it really starts to look like a classic case of “I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine.” Warner Bros. gets to milk the “Weapons” IP, while Cregger gets the studio support to bankroll his passion project. Everybody wins.

At this point, it’s pretty clear that “Gladys” isn’t a top priority for Cregger. He has a bunch of projects he wants to direct, and given his recent comments about not wanting to make any more franchise films after “Resident Evil,” it seems like he’s gradually steering away from it. And honestly, I don’t blame him. “Gladys” feels completely unnecessary to make at this stage in his career.
