Do We Need Another ‘Cape Fear’? Apple TV Drops Teaser With Javier Bardem as Max Cady

March 31, 2026 Jordan Ruimy

Why did they greenlight this, and why is there so much talent involved?

Here’s another remake, reimagining, or whatever Hollywood likes to call such titles these days to skirt the fact that it’s recycling familiar intellectual property instead of taking a creative risk. Javier Bardem stars as Max Cady in “Cape Fear,” a series remake of the classic 1962 and 1991 films. We now have a teaser trailer. The first thing that strikes me is the familiarity. The second thing is Bardem potentially being miscast as Cady.

Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson co-star as the couple Cady terrorizes. You would think the script must have been great for such talent to take part in a remake that, on paper, sounds unnecessary.

“Cape Fear,” which was originally based on John D. Macdonald’s novel “The Executioners,” tells the story of a lawyer who is stalked by notorious killer Max Cady after Cady is released from prison. Martin Scorsese directed the 1991 version, which was famously spoofed by “The Simpsons.”

As mentioned, Bardem will be playing Cady, a role that was originally rendered iconic by Robert Mitchum (1962) and later by Robert De Niro (1991). Bardem did a masterful job playing the villain in “No Country for Old Men,” so he can definitely play evil.

Bardem may bring gravity and menace to Cady, but it’s hard to imagine his take landing anywhere near the delirious, sweat-soaked lunacy Robert De Niro unleashed in Scorsese’s “Cape Fear.” De Niro didn’t just play Cady; he devoured the movie whole—tattoos, accent, and all—turning every scene into a piece of deliciously twisted overacting that felt both dangerous and perversely fun. For a character like Cady, anything less than that kind of shameless excess is bound to pale in comparison.

The series is showrun by Nick Antosca, who is best known for creating the true crime dramas “A Friend of the Family” and “The Act.” It should also be noted that Scorsese and Steven Spielberg are producing the 10-episode series.

“Cape Fear” will make its global debut on Friday, June 5, 2026, via Apple TV, with the first two episodes, followed by new episodes every Friday.
