Ryan Gosling to Star in The Daniels’ Mysterious New Sci-Fi Film [Updated]

March 26, 2026 Jordan Ruimy

They’re back. Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan, 21st century Godards of fart and dildo jokes, directed 2022’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once” to total domination of the 95th Oscars. The film won seven Oscars, including the Best Picture and Best Director statuettes. Ford, Wilder, Coppola, Eastwood, Spielberg, Scorsese … Scheinert/Kwan — a rich tradition of Oscar-winning filmmakers.

As you know, the Daniels’ next film is coming out November 19, 2027 via Universal. It’s still untitled, but it’s eyeing a shoot this summer in California.

Here comes a major update: Ryan Gosling will star in the film. His role is being kept under wraps, but it’s a huge get for Kwan and Scheinert, the filmmaking duo behind “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”

Another huge role for Gosling, who is coming off “Barbie,” “The Fall Guy,” and is currently topping the box office with “Project Hail Mary.” He’s also set to lead Shawn Levy’s “Star Wars: Starfighter,” which hits theatres next year. He’s been going at it in Hollywood for nearly thirty years, but this is no doubt the peak phase of his career.

Although we don’t know much in terms of plot specifics, Kwan did recently confirm that the film is a “fun sci-fi action comedy” with “a big heart,” which is basically how EEAAO was described, less so their first feature — “Swiss Army Man” — which at Sundance 2016 had been dubbed as the “farting corpse movie.”

Originally dated for June 12, 2026, this new project quietly vanished from Universal’s schedule last year, sparking rumors of creative overhauls, and Kwan did confirm that the script has been tinkered with to adapt to the constant changes in the world.

This mysterious new film will arrive more than five years after “Everything Everywhere” hit theaters, a time when indie cinema was still reeling from the pandemic and the Daniels’ A24 oddity somehow became an indie hit.

Suffice to say, EEAAO was more than just a movie. It was a meme. A big, giant, fat meme that, according to its fans, had lots of heart: The hot dog fingers! Racacooine! That rock with the jiggly eye! The Bagel! Short Round! Kwan actually admitted he wrote the film as an attempt to recognize and understand his previously undiagnosed ADHD, but why should we have suffered in the process?

Okay, I’ll stop. There are many who completely abide by EEAAO, I get it, and at least the film was striving to be original. The Daniels seem to have found a large fanbase because of it, including Steven Spielberg who called EEAAO “such a genius amazing work.” Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuaron also acknowledged the generational impact the film has had. I’ve rewatched the film a few times over the years, so it’s not like I didn’t try.
