On Friday, THR reported that Sony hired writer Pete Chiarelli (“The Proposal” and “Crazy Rich Asians”) to reboot Charlie’s Angels for the 2020s. The script is currently being written.
Although no cast was revealed, The InSneider is now reporting that Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu are expected to return for this new movie — what? It’s unclear whether they are the leads or if they are just there to pass the torch to a new trio of Angels, but they will be in the reboot.
Not just that, Chiarelli is also trying to find a way to bring back Demi Moore, who played an ex-Angel in the 2003 sequel “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” — the problem is that her character actually died, accidentally blowing herself up. But don’t you fret! Chiarelli is trying to piece her back together.
McG directed a pair of Angels movies in the early 2000s — starring Diaz, Barrymore, and Liu — and while the sequel was not good, that first one was pure bubblegum entertainment: disposable, but watchable fun.
Diaz, recently un-retired from acting, has hopped on board several projects in recent months; Barrymore has been occupied with her daytime talk show, and Liu has continued acting in movies, including the upcoming ‘Devil Wears Prada’ sequel.
By all accounts, Chiarelli will pretend that the Elizabeth Banks–directed reboot, which Sony released in 2019 and which infamously flopped, never happened. So don’t expect Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska to return.
“Charlie’s Angels” was a pop culture sensation back in the ’70s, and it embraced sexiness, making stars out of Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson, and Jaclyn Smith. McG understood the assignment; Banks didn’t. Let’s hope Chiarelli gets it.
