Rumors of a Taylor Swift theatrical release had been circulating for weeks, with many expecting an ‘Eras’ Tour doc. Instead, Swift will release a film tied directly to her latest album.
Yes, Swift is heading back to theaters next month. On October 3rd, the same day her 12th studio album “The Life of a Showgirl” drops, Swift will debut an 89-minute theatrical event titled “Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl.”
The event — framed as a “film” — will play exclusively over her album’s release weekend (Oct. 3–5) across all 540 AMC locations, as well as thousands of Cinemark, Regal, and independent theaters throughout North America.
The centerpiece for fans will be the premiere of Swift’s new music video, “The Fate of Ophelia.” The program also features behind-the-scenes footage from the shoot, lyric videos, and what’s being billed as “never-before-seen personal reflections” from Swift herself.
Swift’s last big-screen outing, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” (2023), shattered records with $181M domestic and $262M worldwide, making it the highest-grossing concert film of all time. That release also marked the start of Swift’s ongoing distribution partnership with AMC.
This new project is far smaller in scope — a three-day “celebration” versus a months-long box-office juggernaut, but it should provide a much-needed jolt for theater operators during a soft fall frame. Its competition that weekend: Dwayne Johnson’s “The Smashing Machine” and a re-release of “Avatar: The Way of Water.”
Swift will most likely top the box office that weekend as I’m hearing sales for ‘The Smashing Machine’ have been fairly sluggish.
