With Netflix nixing last weekend’s box-office champ ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ from theaters, it looks as though Zach Cregger’s “Weapons” will reclaim the top spot over labor day weekend with a $12M tally. It might hit the $140M domestic mark by Monday.
There are two new wide releases this weekend, and both will sadly not be drawing much of an audience. The summer box-office, which has totalled $3.4 billion so far, is ending on a whimper
The big film this weekend, at least around here, is Darren Aronofsky’s “Caught Stealing.” And why wouldn’t it be? “Requiem for a Dream,” “Black Swan,” and “The Wrestler” are practically staples of 21st-century American cinema. However, the new release isn’t set to make much of a cultural impact, pulling in just $1.2M from Thursday previews and tracking for a $10M four-day total. That’s a steep climb against its $40M budget.
I missed the press screening for “Caught Stealing” since I was traveling to Venice, and will only watch it later next month, but what did our readers think of Aronofsky’s latest? “Caught Stealing” holds a 67 on Metacritic and 84% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The CinemaScore is “B,” which is an improvement for Aronofsky since he’s the king of bad CinemaScores: “Noah” (C), “The Fountain” (C–), and most infamously, “mother!” (F) He’ll definitely take the “B” on this one.
NOTE: Jay Roach’s “The Roses” is destined for a worse fate. It only amassed $800k yesterday, and estimates have it opening at around $7M. Reviews have been mediocre for this remake of Danny DeVito’s “War of the Roses.” The whole thing felt like a misbegotten idea the minute it got greenlit.
