Doug Liman’s long-gestating underwater thriller “Deeper,” starring Tom Cruise, recently hit choppy waters when its August shoot was delayed over a staggering $275M budget request.
With that one temporarily on pause, Liman has hopped on-board a few other projects, including “The Initiative,” starring Angelina Jolie, and “The Stand,” a Stephen King adaptation.
Here’s another project, and if we believe Variety, it’ll be Liman’s next film. He’s signed on to direct “Killing Satoshi,” a conspiracy thriller inspired by the ongoing debate over the true identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin’s elusive inventor.
The film will star Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea) and Pete Davidson (The King of Staten Island), though details about their characters are still under wraps. The screenplay comes from Nick Schenk, who penned Eastwood’s “Gran Torino” and “The Mule.” His script reportedly follows a shadowy global network intent on silencing the truth about Bitcoin’s mysterious creator.
Filming begins in London this October, with release planned for 2026.
Since Bitcoin’s emergence in 2009, Nakamoto has remained an enigma—seen by some as a visionary liberating individuals from traditional finance, and by others as a destabilizing threat to governments and institutions. Analysts believe Nakamoto mined roughly one million Bitcoin in the early years, an untouched fortune now valued around $64 billion. If still alive, that would make Nakamoto one of the wealthiest people on the planet.
This has the potential to be a fascinating film.
