First Look: Jacob Elordi as Monster in Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein’

July 28, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

Here’s our first at Jacob Elordi in Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” which is set to screen this September at Venice and Toronto, via Vanity Fair.

Elordi takes on the role of the reanimated creature, though his appearance remains tightly under wraps in this exclusive early look. When fully revealed, the monster is said to resemble a fragmented marble statue from antiquity, pieced back together.

The gruesome reassembly sequence, led by Oscar Isaac’s Dr. Frankenstein, gave Elordi a rare break from the set. “I think that’s the one day I didn’t shoot,” he tells Vanity Fair.

The production faced an unexpected shake-up just ahead of filming when Andrew Garfield, originally cast as the creature, abruptly exited the project. The departure was due to scheduling conflicts that emerged in the aftermath of the 2023 Hollywood strikes, which caused a ripple effect across multiple productions. Garfield’s exit left the filmmakers scrambling, nine weeks out of production, but Elordi stepped in at the eleventh hour.

The result is an ambitious film. Clocking in at a hefty 2 hours and 29 minutes; “Frankenstein” is only one minute shorter than his last live-action, 2021’s “Nightmare Alley.”

The film, produced by Netflix, reimagines Mary Shelley’s classic novel through del Toro’s signature Gothic horror lens. The casting is loaded: Isaac Elordi, Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, Charles Dance and Ralph Ineson.

The film has been rated R for “bloody violence and grisly images,” further evidence that del Toro won’t be soft-pedaling his story.
