Karla Sofía Gascón Causes Controversy Over Tweets About George Floyd, Muslims and “Afro-Korean” Oscars

January 30, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

What we’re seeing here is the melting down of an Oscar campaign. I won’t lie, it’s been more entertaining to witness than half of this year’s best picture nominees. Karla Sofia Gascon has destroyed the entire “Emilia Perez” Oscar campaign in the span of 24 hours.

UPDATE: In 2021, Karla Sofía Gascón weighed in on the Oscars, citing the inclusive lineup, and describing the ceremony as feeling like an “Afro-Korean” festival.

More and more the #Oscars are looking like a ceremony for independent and protest films, I didn’t know if I was watching an Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration or the 8M. Apart from that, an ugly, ugly gala.

This was the same Oscar ceremony where Daniel Kaluuya, Youn Yuh-jung and Chloe Zhao won their respective categories.

UPDATE: Well, what can I say, Gascón’s gonna Gascón. The Oscar nominee is now being scolded for recently unearthed tweets about George Floyd just days after he was killed by a police officer, saying:

I really think that very few people ever cared about George Floyd, a drug addict swindler, but his death has served to once again demonstrate that there are people who still consider black people to be monkeys Without rights and consider policemen to be assassins. They’re all wrong.

UPDATE: Here comes yet another controversy, this one relating to old resurfaced tweets where Gascón blasts the Muslim population in Spain, and says they should be kicked out of the country.

Islam is becoming a hotbed of infection for humanity that urgently needs to be cured […] Until we ban religions that go against European values and violate human rights, such as Islam, under the protection of freedom of worship, we will not end part of the huge problem we face. Faith manipulates those who cling to faith.

EARLIER: Karla Sofia Gascón made Oscar history as the first openly transgender person to be nominated in an acting category. And yet, Gascón has been so unhinged this awards season, and I absolutely love to see it. The entertainment value in Gascon’s unfiltered social media posts has made following the Oscars semi-tolerable.

The latest Gascón blunder has the “Emilia Perez” best actress nominee attacking the team of fellow nominee, and “I’m Still Here” star, Fernanda Torres for spreading lies and saying unkind things about her in an effort to derail her Oscar campaign.

“I don’t like that there’s a social media team that work around these people that are attempting to discredit my work and my film because that doesn’t take us anywhere,” Gascón said during an interview with Brazil’s Folha de São Paulo.

She continued, “To highlight someone else’s work, you don’t need to destroy others. You will never see me talking negatively about Fernanda Torres or her film, but on the contrary, I do see many people working around Fernanda Torres who talk badly about me, and Emilia Pérez. I think that speaks more about them and their film than of me.”

Of course, after these comments went viral, Gascón had to clarify that it was all just one big fat misunderstanding, calling Torres a “wonderful ally.” “This isn’t a competition, this is simply people that like one’s work or not,” Gascón added. “If [Torres] wins [the Oscar], great. If I win, same.”
