Matt Reeves Says ‘The Batman' is Still Being Planned as a Trilogy

September 12, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

Matt Reeves is supposed to shoot “The Batman: Part II” early next year. Robert Pattinson, Colin Farrell, Zoe Kravitz, Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis and, potentially, Barry Keoghan as Joker are set to join the cast. He’s now confirmed to Collider that the plan is still to turn it all into a trilogy.

Reeves’ ‘Batman 2’ script, which has already been through quite a few drafts, isn’t finished yet. DCU head James Gunn recently stated that the script would be submitted “when Matt thinks it’s ready.” One person who is definitely going to be back is DP Greig Fraser who recently confirmed his participation for the sequel.

Reeves is taking his time with this one, and for good reason. There’s no rush, next year is especially going to be an important one for Gunn’s DCU with “Superman: Legacy” set for summer release. There’s also another DCU Batman movie rumored to shoot in late 2025, that would be Andy Muschietti’s “The Brave and the Bold.”

There have just been too many Batman movies these last 35 years — I’ve counted 10. It’ll be very hard for Reeves to top Christopher Nolan’s trilogy. He probably won’t.

In the meantime, “The Penguin,” which has been getting positive reviews, premieres on September 19 on HBO. The show is meant to be a set up for the events of “The Batman: Part II” which would be picking up right where the ‘Penguin’ season finale left off.

“The Batman” (2022) was hailed as an ambitious return to form for the Caped Crusader. It was a near 3-hour movie that grossed $369.3 million in the United States, and $401.6 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $770.9 million.

“The Batman – Part II” is scheduled to hit theaters October 2, 2026.
