Wait, what happened? Predictions had "Practical Magic 2" finishing in the $40M opening range after strong $4.7M Thursday previews and robust presales. Now it's struggling, and might not even hit $30M.
The Saturday numbers have "Practical Magic 2" making $10M, and that's coming off a $9M Friday; it'll be lower on Sunday, as it usually is for most movies. The current projection is $29M, a far cry from the $40–45M some had anticipated.
Considering the first film limped to $68M globally against a $75M budget, the sequel might match or slightly surpass that total, but that's certainly not a win.
Blame the bad reviews. Yes, a "B+" CinemaScore means fans liked it, but in a decade where Rotten Tomatoes scores matter more to a film's box office than some care to admit, that 39% has been brutal optics.
It's now come to the point where break-even might not happen for "Practical Magic 2" — a film with these kinds of reviews tends to freefall in its second weekend. A $78M budget isn't helping matters; almost half of that probably went to its stars, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman.
Warner Bros. is having its worst year at the box office in 28 years (not counting the 2020 pandemic). It's been twelve months since a film of theirs hit that mark — last fall's "The Conjuring: Last Rites," released September 5, 2025. Warner Bros. was coming off a 2025 that produced seven straight $40M+ openings.
This year? "The Bride," "They Will Kill You," Lee Cronin's "The Mummy," "Mortal Kombat II," "Supergirl," "The End of Oak Street" and "Evil Dead Burn."
In other box office news, it's quite possible that by Monday "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" will pass "The Force Awakens" as the highest-grossing domestic movie of all time. It just had an $8.5M+ weekend, a decent 47% drop. "The Odyssey" ($8.3M) was right behind it, and "Coyote vs. Acme" continues to have legs, making another $6.8M — its domestic total is almost $50M, with $10M more overseas.
Edward Berger seems to have settled on what comes next. His Lance Armstrong biopic, starring Austin Butler, is now holding casting calls, with production eyed for January.
