A “Disgusting” ‘Alien: Romulus’ Scene Teased — SPOILERS

February 14, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

Fede Álvarez’s “Alien: Romulus” will be coming out this year, and star Isabela Merced is teasing a disgusting scene from the upcoming horror movie that had her co-stars turning away in horror during a recent cast and crew screening.

Here’s Merced speaking with THR:

There’s a scene that I’m in, and they all had to turn away. Not one person stayed looking at that iPad because it was so disgusting […] And I was watching it like this … (Merced pretends to hold an iPad with a mesmerized look on her face.) I was so excited.

I’m pretty sure I know what the scene is, so, SPOILERS ahead … Remember the chest bursting scene in 1979 original? Álvarez one ups that one with a rectum bursting scene.

Yes, a baby xenomorph tries to find its way out of a human body and decides the best way to go is via the anal cavity. This is coming from a single source of mine who saw a rough cut of the film, so take it for whatever it’s worth.

‘Romulus’ takes place between “Alien” and “Aliens,” a time when Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) was adrift in cryosleep. The film wrapped production last June in Hungary.

On paper, Alvarez’s film doesn’t sound as ambitious as, say, “Prometheus.” Based on what we know so far, it’ll basically be Gen-Z vs the Xenomorph. The only synopsis we have is this one:

A group of young people on a distant world, who find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe.

At least Alvarez got Ridley Scott’s endorsement. Last year, AVP Galaxy reported that Alvarez sent an early director’s cut of “Alien: Romulus” for Scott to screen. Scott is a harsh critic, which Alvarez knew, and it turns out that Scott loved the film (“it’s f*cking great” he stated).

This is the seventh film of the franchise, and it stars a young batch of actors — Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, and Spike Fearn.

The ‘Alien’ saga, which began in 1979 with Ridley Scott's film, and Sigourney Weaver in the lead, has had many sequels over the years. Álvarez, best known for the excellent “Don't Breathe” and the “Evil Dead” remake, will try to follow in the footsteps of Ridley Scott, James Cameron, David Fincher and Jean-Pierre Jeunet.

“Alien: Romulus” arrives in theaters on August 16, 2024. This is a co-production between 20th Century Studios and Scott Free Productions.
