Ridley Scott Says Studio Interference Delayed His Bee Gees Movie: “I Stepped Away" [Updated]

November 20, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

UPDATE: Just a quick update on this one. Ridley Scott is saying that studio interference is to blame as far as the delays with this one go (via Kermode & Mayo’s Take).

I was right up to the threshold of Bee Gees, and the studio changed the footprint. I didn’t like it. They didn’t like the deal, so I stepped away. I said, “be warned I’ve got another one ready”

EARLIER: I’m starting to have doubts about Ridley Scott’s Bee Gees biopic ever happening. It was supposed to shoot in February, but suddenly got delayed and Scott has now moved on to another project. Here’s Scott briefly mentioning the delay to Deadline:

We had a hiccup on The Bee Gees movie, which we don’t need to discuss. I’m hoping to return to that by the end of next year. I’ve prepped it and had a very good meeting recently with Barry Gibb, who honestly I haven’t seen for 50 years.

Scott’s biopic, tentatively titled “You Should Be Dancing,” was supposed to be his next film, and he kept mentioning it in an assortment of interviews. What happened? Is it a music rights issue? Regardless, it’s not like this is the most exciting project that Scott currently has percolating in his arsenal.

In fact, Scott has seven other projects in development, and his next film will definitely the “The Dog Stars,” starring Paul Mescal — a sci-fi tackling the few survivors in a world devastated by a global pandemic. The other six in development, that we know of, are “BOMB,” “The Battle of Britain,” “Gladiator III,” “Big Dogs,” “Queen and Country,” and “You Should Be Dancing.”
