Ed Lachman is DP on Pablo Larrain’s Upcoming ‘Maria’

September 22, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

UPDATE: Kodi Smit-McPhee and Alba Rohrwacher have joined the cast.

You just can’t imagine a Todd Haynes movie without Edward Lachlan’s sultry photography. The duo were set to shoot “May/December” last year, but Lachman broke his hip and wasn’t able to collaborate.

Turns out Lachman got injured after shooting Pablo Larrain’s “El Conde,” which is now streaming on Netflix. This collaboration has clearly sparked something in him since I’m now hearing Lachman will also be lensing Larrain’s “Maria” next month.

Pre-production on Larraín‘s “Maria” is already underway. It had been reported that the film will start shooting in October and wrap production in December. It had been mentioned that the film wouldn’t be delayed because of the strikes.

Angela Jolie will star as famous opera singer Maria Callas in the aptly titled “Maria” which will recount the tumultuous, beautiful, and tragic story of the life of the world’s greatest opera singer, relived and re-imagined during her final days in 1970s Paris.

Lachman still shoots on film, bless him, and has made a name for himself as one of the Best Working Cinematographers in the game. He is an expert at recreating the cinematic visual language of different eras (check out “Far From Heaven” and “Carol”). Here’s an artist who loves looking back on old-school techniques to create these dreamy, surreal visual states.

Lachman’s antiquated cinematographic techniques in “Far From Heaven” were so meticulous in detail that only a true craftsman could pull off what he did in they film. His use of color, along with his penchant for classical compositions, makes his films stunning to look at. I’m sure Haynes realizes that Lachman will be sorely missed on-set.
