Netflix Prioritizing ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Sequel’

August 9, 2022 Jordan Ruimy

It’s somewhat of a weak year for Netflix’s awards prospects, their lineup of fall films just isn’t as stacked as in previous years.

Last month I reported on how Netflix was going to heavily campaign around Rian Johnson’s “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”. I also wrote that it was their #2 priority of the season, right behind Inarritu’s “Bardo,” and that Baumbach’s “White Noise” was not as prioritized because the streaming giant believed it was “too polarizing.”

Maybe now, with Inarritu’s film not going to Toronto and New York, Netflix will push the “Knives Out” sequel hard. Advanced word-of-mouth for Janelle Monae’s performance has also been very strong.

With “Rustin” going to 2023, “Shirley” getting negative reactions from its test-screening, “Blonde” carrying heavy post-production baggage and “The Killer” a 2022 uncertainty, the road is paved in gold for “Glass Onion” and, to a certain extent, “Bardo.”

Netflix also has Sebastian Lelio’s “The Wonder,” going to Telluride and Toronto, but, from my understanding, its biggest chances reside in the costume category.

Meanwhile, Netflix is banking hard on Henry Selick’s “Wendell & Wild” crashing the Best Animated Film category. Ditto Edward Berger’s German remake of “All Quiet On the Western” becoming a contender in the International Film category.

Guillermo del Toro’s “Pinocchio” is expected to land in December. I would imagine that will also be a big deal for Netflix.
