Telluride Film Festival Predictions *Final*

August 23, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

I can't confirm the precise title, but a lot of talk is pointing towards a surprise film sneaking its way into the Telluride Film Festival lineup next week. As of right now, Todd Haynes’ “Dark Waters,” Jay Roach’s “Bombshell” and Chloe Zhao’s “Nomadland” are the best bets, but if one of these titles is in fact going to the big dance, then why skip all the other festivals? That wouldn’t make much sense, unless the movie in question is a non-starter or, rather strangely, the studio behind it has decided to grace Telluride with total exclusivity.

There’s also this juicy bit of news, Todd Phillips’ “Joker” has been announced as an NYC premiere screening at the New York Film Festival. What does that mean? Quite simply, “Joker” will be screening somewhere else in the U.S. before NYC and, maybe, just maybe, that somewhere else could be Telluride, but I still highly doubt that given that it could just mean that an L.A premiere is happening before NYFF.

Regardless, we are just seven days away before the Telluride Film Festival announcing its lineup and screening its first few movies, anticipation is no doubt at a fever pitch and we, more or less, know 90% of the lineup (through premiere designations from the Toronto and New York fests). Going by sources, premiere statuses, Michael Patterson’s Telluride site and, really, just hard-earned rumors, we have 22 movies thus far which are more than HIGHLY likely going to Telluride:

Premieres

1) The Aeronauts 2) First Cow 3) Ford v Ferrari 4) Judy 5) Marriage Story 6) Motherless Brooklyn 7) The Two Popes 8) Uncut Gems 9) Waves 10) The Kingmaker 11) Lyrebird 12) Ken Burns’ Country Music 13) Verdict

Cannes Titles

14) A Hidden Life 15) Beanpole 16) The Climb 17) Pain and Glory 18) Parasite 19) Portrait of a Lady on Fire
20) Family Romance LLC

Sundance and Berlin Titles

21) The Report 22) Varda by Agnes
