Denis Villeneuve has reason to be angry about the HBO Max/Warner Bros. streaming deal from last week. The Quebecois filmmaker has emerged these last 10 years as a major voice in mainstream moviemaking, with films such as “Arrival,” “Sicario” and “Blade Runner 2049” earning him glowing reviews and a major fanbase. He was just getting started.

Since launching in November 2019, Disney+’s subscriber growth has blown past expectations, according to its CEO Bob Chapek. The mouse house’s streaming service closed the fourth quarter of the year with a total of 86.8 million subscribers; During its late 2019 launch, Disney’s goal was to reach 60 to 90 million subscriptions by 2024. Mission accomplished. They will surpass that number in the next few months.

You may have noticed the rave reviews being thrown at Garrett Bradley’s “Time.” I say, don’t pay attention to them; it is very difficult to sympathize with any of the subjects in this documentary, aside from the children.
Read more‘Let Them All Talk': Soderbergh's Shoestring Budgeted HBO Max Experiment is Playfully Acerbic [Review]
Steven Soderbergh is a legend of independent filmmaking. His latest, the HBO Max comedy, “Let Them All Talk,” (12.10.20) was shot in just two weeks and was largely improvised by its cast. The film stars Meryl Streep, Dianne Wiest, and Candice Bergen, who play longtime friends reuniting on an ocean liner.
Read moreNate Parker’s Blacklisted ‘American Skin’ Gets January 2021 Release Date
It’s been three years since Nate Parker was “cancelled” by the industry at large for a past 1999 rape allegation. However, the director made a comeback, of sorts, last year at the Venice Film Festival with “American Skin.” Spike Lee was in attendance at the screening, supporting Parker and telling the audience that we need to “move forward.” A Venice career comeback seemed to be in-the-works for Parker, but, turns out, critics had their fangs fready for Parker, and a lot of work needed to be done before the actor-directorcould properly rehabilitate his career.

Based on Lily Brooks-Dalton’s novel “Good Morning, Midnight”, George Clooney teams up with Netflix for the sci-fi drama “The Midnight Sky” (Netflix, 12.25.20) in which he also stars. In it, Clooney plays scientist Augustine, who races to stop a group of astronauts, led by Felicity Jones’ Sully, from returning to a post-apocalyptic planet Earth.

Christopher Nolan was asked by ET‘s John Boone about Warner Bros.’s recent decision to open all of its 2021 releases simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max. Nolan, a longtime advocate of theatrical presentation, did not hold back in his strong disapproval:
Read more‘The Prom': Ryan Murphy Fans Rejoice, While the Rest of Us Shriek in Horror [Review]
Based on the 2018 Broadway musical and directed by unabashed showman Ryan Murphy, “The Prom” starts off strongly, with a kind of self-aware mockery of itself, as we are introduced to a quartet of washed-up NYC musical theater actors: Dee Dee, an aging legendary actress (Meryl Streep); Barry, a goofy sideman (James Corden); Trent, a pretentious Juilliard grad bartender (Andrew Rannells); and Angie, a 20-year “Chicago” chorus girl (Nicole Kidman).
Read more2020 Critics Poll Participants
I had quite a few requests about posting the individual lists of those who participated in our 2020 critics poll of the best movies of the year. The following are *most* of them as about a dozen or so decided to abstain from having their lists revealed publicly due to their still being works in progress. Still, these are 100 or so lists here, the most mentioned titles being “Nomadland,” followed by “First Cow” and “Never Rarely Sometimes Always.” Given the drastic distance between the top 3 and then fourth place, I am quite confident that these three will be the most listed films of the year, all three directed by women, and all three having been theatrical released during the course of the year.

One of the highlights of this year’s New York Film Festival has been watching Steve McQueen’s new film anthology, “Small Axe.” NYFF chose three of the five films featured in the upcoming BBC series, “Lovers Rock” “Mangrove” and “Red, White, and Blue.” The first two were chosen for competition for Cannes 2020 before the festival had to be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The latter had its world premiere at NYFF and was just screened for press.
Read more‘Wonder Woman 1984’: Early Reactions Are Positive
The massive success "Wonder Woman" had two summers ago must have given director Patty Jenkins a sweet feeling of revenge on the industry, after they shunned her for 13 years following her 2004 Oscar-winner “Monster”. The WB-produced superhero movie turned out to be the second highest-grossing title of 2017 and was met with rave reviews. Now, a sequel, titled “Wonder Woman 1984” is about to be released on Christmas, with Jenkins and star Gal Gadot returning for more pesos.

Filmed mostly in a single hospital in the city of Wuhan, Hao Wu’s “76 Days” shows the period of close to three months of lockdown in a Chinese hospital coping with an endless amount of outbreaks.
Read more’Nomadland’ Chloe Zhao’s Docu-Fiction Venice Winner [Review]
Chloe Zhao‘s “Nomadland,” which just won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, is not going to be a film for the masses, and all the better for it. This is a moody, and mesmerizing third film from the Chinese-American filmmaker, after her triumphant 2018 film, “The Rider.” Much like her previous efforts, this is Zaho’s 21st-century depiction of Americana angst, mixing non-fiction and fiction filmmaking in effortless fashion.
Read more‘Mank’ Continues to Underwhelm Me ...
David Fincher’s “Mank” is now available to stream on Netflix. You can read my mixed-to-positive review, dated 11.12.20. Since then, I’ve given “Mank” a few more shots, but still cannot fully come around to its coldly detaching frames. The technical mastery is one thing, but the story left me cold and uninvolved. This was a bold movie to make for Fincher, but it lacks the stylistic stamp of his other films and feels more like a passion project -- his father wrote the screenplay back in 1993.

Warner Bros. announced earlier today that its entire 2021 film slate will open via a “distribution model in which Warner Bros. will continue to exhibit the films theatrically worldwide, while adding an exclusive one month access period on the HBO Max streaming platform in the U.S. concurrent with the film’s domestic release.”

The Sundance Film Festival shared details about the shape of its upcoming 2021 edition, providing for the first time how the Festival will take place and where. Suffice to say, the online expression of the Festival will be unique, what we have here is a primarily virtual festival via an online platform, which was designed and custom-built. Feature films will each make their premiere at a set start time followed by a live Q&A. There will also be in-person screenings in over 28 U.S. States (as health and safety protocols permit) through a network of partnerships in arthouse communities.

The strangest cinematic year is about to come to an end. 2020 was filled with stoppages in theatrical releases and the full embracement of VOD and other such streaming platforms. Is it any wonder then that only 5 of the 20 most critically-acclaimed movies of the year were released exclusively in theaters?

The Cahiers du Cinéma never cared about hive-mind or “groupthink,” they live in their own passionate world of moviegoing. The social media embargo has been lifted for Paul Greengrass’ “News of the World” (12.25.20). This is a cautionary tale told via conventional, albeit mostly-successful, terms. The older, white and male contingent of the Academy are going to dig the hell out of this one.
