Writers Guild Awards Nominate “Black Panther,” “A Star is Born,” & More; Snub “First Reformed”

January 7, 2019 Jordan Ruimy
Black-Panther-Wakanda-Chadwick-Boseman-1200x520.jpg

A major snub from this year's Writers Guild Awards nominations was Paul Schrader‘s “First Reformed ”screenplay. A film driven by its immaculately calculated screenplay more than anything else. Nope, the WGA believes that “Black Panther” deserves a nomination for its by-the-books script but not Schrader’s – hell, even John Krasinski’s near-wordless script for “A Quiet Place” was nominated.

“Aquaman” Kissing Scene Censored in Indonesia and Saudi Arabia, Deemed “Too Graphic”

January 7, 2019 Jordan Ruimy
aquaman censor.jpg

"Aquaman" has been a resounding success at the worldwide box-office, so, because of its international clout, it has found its way into more, shall we say, conservative areas of the world. By all accounts there doesn't seem to be any need for censorship in director James Wan's PG-13 DC flick, but when in Saudi Arabia and Indonesia ...

Christian Bale win Best Actor Golden Globe for playing Dick Cheney, thanks Satan for giving him inspiration

January 7, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

Christian Bale won Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for "Vice" and thanked “Satan” for helping him nail the role of former Vice President Dick Cheney in his Golden Globe acceptance speech.

"Look at all of us! A bunch of lucky buggers," "Vice" star Christian Bale says to the audience accepting the award for best actor in a comedy or musical. "Thank you to Satan for giving me inspiration" to play former vice president Dick Cheney in the film, he jokes, and also asks who his next "charisma-free role" will be: "Mitch McConnell, maybe?"

“He was a wonderful family man — he’s a great dad, he’s an avid reader, he has a brain like a vice and he constantly reads history,” the actor said in an interview last month. ”He was very laid-back. He would have been very happy to be a lineman in Wyoming if he hadn’t met Lynne, who said to him, ‘No, that doesn’t cut it. You need some ambition.’ What would have been if they hadn’t met?”

Chloé Zhao’s “The Rider” Named Best Picture by National Society of Film Critics

January 6, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

“The Rider” has been named Best Picture by the National Society of Film Critics, a huge shock as Chloé Zhao’s groundbreaking western hadn't won much up until today, despite glowing reviews back in May when the film was released. The only other win it had to shout about was a Best Feature prize at the Gotham Independent Film Awards.

Jar Jar Binks Actor Says “Racism-Fueled” Backlash Led to Him contemplating Suicide

January 6, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

Jar Jar Binks is considered to be the most hated character in "Star Wars" history. Not even those damn Ewoks can dethrone the Gungan from "The Phantom Menace". In fact, the hatred directed at the character had such a negative effect on its portrayer, actor Ahmed Best, that he contemplated suicide, “I faced a media backlash that really made me feel like my life was over” the actor says in a recently released video interview, adding, “There was just so much hate and anger and venom directed at me, and I took it personally…I put a lot of me into that work, and if you talk to any artist who really cares about their work, you’re talking about them,” Best says.

“Green Book” Actor Viggo Mortensen Says Don Shirley’s Family’s Criticisms “Unjustified”

January 5, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

Covering the dark cloud of controversy that's been looming over Peter Farrelly’s “Green Book” has not been fun for me. This is a film that, in all likelihood, will be nominated for Best Picture, and all this despite Viggo Mortensen uttering the N-word last month at a Q&A, and despite accusations implying that it goes against the current grain of progressive thought, with the term "white savior" having been uttered more than a few times by film journalists and despite Dr. Don Shirley's family coming out  most recently and saying the film is a "symphony of lies."

‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ A Step Closer to Best Picture Nomination after PGA Nom; Critics Start Freaking Out On Twitter.

January 4, 2019 Jordan Ruimy
Bohemian-Rhapsody-3.jpg

This morning the PGA (Producers Guild of America) enlightened us with their 10 nominees for their Best Picture prize. Suffice to say. what we have on our hands here is a good old fashioned elitist freakout over "Bohemian Rhapsody" getting an nod. For me, without a doubt, the more appalling nominee is "Crazy Rich Asians," which was most likely included because of the all-Asian cast and the fact that it made a lot of money. The hatred towards "Bohemian Rhapsody" stems from the "de-queering" of Freddy Mercury in the film, which i find to be a mute point considering the film did what it set out to do: entertain. These critics, which include IndieWire's David Ehrlich, The New York Times' Kyle Buchanan and Variety's Guy Lodge, would like to maintain the pressure on ‘Rhapsody’ despite the fact that “Crazy Rich Asians” was a far more middling film and is now destined to become the worst Best Picture nominee since 2011’s "Extremely Loud and Incredible Close."

PGA Nominees, a good precursor to Best Picture Oscar, include Surprises “Crazy Rich Asians,” “A Quiet Place” “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Vice”

The PGA is usually the most accurate way to predict the Oscar nominees for Best Picture. Thousands of Hollywood and foreign producers vote for the PGA awards. Those same producers are most likely, or at least the majority of them, Oscar voters as well.

‘Arctic’ Trailer: Mads Mikkelsen Survival Film Recalls ‘127 Hours,’ ‘All Is Lost’ and ‘The Grey’

January 3, 2019 Jordan Ruimy
arctic.png

In "Arctic," directed by Joe Penna, Mads Mikkelson plays Overgård, a man whose plane has crashed, leaving him stuck in the wintry landscape of Antarctica, where the extreme conditions could lead to death if help doesn’t come soon enough. Overgård clearly has solid survival skills: he transforms the plane into a warm shelter, and he concocts devices to catch fish from what is left of the plane wreckage. He’s even found a way to radio for help through a handy transmitter. However, when the rescue does finally show up though, nothing goes as planned. A turbulent snowstorm causes another plane crash with the only survivor a young woman who goes in and out of consciousness. From there, Overgård decides to head further north on a harrowing journey to reach a rescue station. Carrying the woman’s body on a sled, Overgård’s heavily-charged trek is a daunting one. Despite the beautiful natural scenery, the wintry mountains are savagely precarious and one misstep can spell doom.
