According to Puck News, the David Fincher-directed, Quentin Tarantino-scripted, Brad Pitt-starring follow-up to “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” is now down to about 200 theaters for its exclusive two-week IMAX run starting November 25. The reason? Regal, Cinemark and a handful of smaller chains are "politely declining" to play it.
So.. Pitt, Tarantino and Fincher, a $200M movie, and two of the three biggest chains in America are basically saying no thanks. Netflix is, of course, to blame.
I can't say I'm shocked. Exhibitors have spent years watching Netflix treat theatrical like a marketing stunt, and a two-week window before a December 23 streaming debut isn't exactly a robust proposition for them. Why give up your IMAX screens over Thanksgiving, one of the busiest moviegoing stretches of the year, for a film that'll be on everyone's TV less than a month later.
