The Warner Bros. animated film “Tom and Jerry” shocked the industry this weekend by making $13.7 million at the domestic box office. The biggest three-day opening for a movie since theaters partially reopened across the country last summer. No other film this weekend came close to “Tom and Jerry” totals. “The Croods: A New Age” came in at second place with a paltry $1.2 million., “The Little Things” nabbed $925,000, and “Wonder Woman 1984” pulled in $710,000 for fourth place.

“Tenet” was the first, and only, big blockbuster to be released since movie theaters closed due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic back in March, it has so far grossed a slight $50.6 million domestically, but has fared better overseas, where it has hauled in $283.4 million.

October 27, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

This week saw the first closely fought battle for the weekend’s top box office spot in a while, as Disney and Warner Bros fought it out in the shape of “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” and “Joker”, as both films entered their second and fourth weekends respectively.

Summer Sequel Slump Continues As ‘MIB: International' and ‘Shaft' Underperform at Box-Office

June 15, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

As if the Hollywood’s Box-Office numbers this summer couldn’t get any worse comes the news that the slumping sequels of the last few months can add two more casualties: Sony’s “MIB: International” and Warner Bros.’ “Shaft.” Both are set to open way below tracker expectations and will consequentially join other Summer box-office bombs such as “Dark Phoenix” “The Secret Life of Pets 2” “Rocketman" and “Godzilla,”

‘Rocketman' Debuts With Average $22M Weekend; 61% Less Than ‘Bohemian Rhapsody' Opening

June 2, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

The jury decision is in on “Rocketman” and the results aren’t necessarily pleasant. Dexter Fletcher’s R-rated Elton John biopic racked up $22M in its opening weekend. Whereas last year’s Freddie Mercury trend-starter “Bohemian Rhpasody” had racked up $51M in its first three days of business. I have said this would happen all along, but the R rating stamped on “Rocketman” prevented it from becoming a profitable endeavor. Hell, at this point, I would be surprised if it even cracks the $100M mark when all is said and done.

Box-Office: ‘Aladdin' Makes $100M in Just 4 Days; ‘Booksmart' Disappoints.

May 27, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

Yesterday, I mentioned that “Booksmart” director Olivia Wilde urged audiences to go see her film, noting that the film is “getting creamed by the big dogs out there.” Wilde’s plea didn’t have much effect, at least in terms of the film’s Sunday earnings.

Box-Office: ‘Shazam' Takes Top Spot; Anti-Abortion Film ‘Unplanned' Continues to Surprise

April 7, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

I’ve been following, with a very close eye, the surprising success of anti-abortion movie “Unplanned” at the American box-office and, suffice to say, It’s been keeping its strong momentum intact, especially in bible-belt states. By all accounts, industry experts are flabbergasted by the success of this movie, which finished in the 8th spot this weekend with a very respectable $3.2 million, after expanding to 1,515 screens.
