Summer Sequel Slump Continues As ‘MIB: International' and ‘Shaft' Underperform at Box-Office

June 15, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

As if the Hollywood’s Box-Office numbers this summer couldn’t get any worse comes the news that the slumping sequels of the last few months can add two more casualties: Sony’s “MIB: International” and Warner Bros.’ “Shaft.” Both are set to open way below tracker expectations and will consequentially join other Summer box-office bombs such as “Dark Phoenix” “The Secret Life of Pets 2” “Rocketman" and “Godzilla,”

“MIB: International” (4,224 screens) is projected to gross $26 million on its opening weekend. By comparison, all three Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones’ “MIB” movies opened to more than double that figure, with even 2012’s “Men In Black 3” opening to an impressive $54.5 million Memorial Day Week-End. As for “Shaft,” it is set to open to a very disappointing $7.3 million opening (2,952 screens).
