Box-Office: ‘Aladdin' Makes $100M in Just 4 Days; ‘Booksmart' Disappoints.

May 27, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

Yesterday, I mentioned that “Booksmart” director Olivia Wilde urged audiences to go see her film, noting that the film is “getting creamed by the big dogs out there.” Wilde’s plea didn’t have much effect, at least in terms of the film’s Sunday earnings.

The big news, however, is that, despite mixed reviews, Disney’s live-action “Aladdin” took in $86 million over the weekend. Having just come back from Cannes, I missed the film when it screened for Boston press last week. Will I ever watch it? Well, I have a duty to do so, but I dread the day it has to be done. From the very beginning this looked like a Disney-marketed nightmare. The reviews do, supposedly, make the point that Will Smith’s Genie isn’t actually the problem when it comes to the movie’s artistic failures.

“John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” finished second with $24 million, crossing the $100 million mark domestically. “Avengers: Endgame” continued on with $16 million, just shy of the $800 million domestic mark.

Next week “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” will face-off against the R-rated Elton John biopic “Rocketman.”

Here’s the domestic Top 10 for May 24 to May 27:

1. Aladdin – $112.7M (Debut)
2. John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum – $31M ($108M Overall)
3. Avengers: Endgame – $22.3M ($803M)
4. Pokemon Detective Pikachu – $17M ($120M)
5. Brightburn – $9.5M (Debut)
6. Booksmart – $8.7M (Debut)
7. A Dog’s Journey – $5.5M ($16.4M)
8. The Hustle – $4.8M ($31M)
9. The Intruder – $2.6M ($32.6M)
10. Long Shot – $2.1M ($29M)
