How weird that Ben Affleck’s “Air” is going to be released theatrically in April. I fully expected a fall festival route for this one, but I guess not. Not just that, Amazon is banking big time with this one, globally releasing it on the same date.
According to Amazon Studios, Affleck’s upcoming directorial effort will be getting a full, worldwide theatrical release in April — including 3000 screens in the US. A vote of confidence for its potential box-office prospects, but quality-wise? Who knows.
The just-released trailer gives off good vibes for its commercial prospects. It’s, at the very least, an interesting true story that will lure plenty of people. Ben Affleck’s hair is odd though. Matt Damon, as always, looks great. It feels conventional, but this kind of adult-oriented mid-budget movie is of a dying breed, so let’s hope for the best.
“Air” tells the story of the rise of Nike thanks to its partnership with rookie Michael Jordan. The film stars Affleck, as well as Matt Damon, Jason Bateman, Viola Davis, Chris Tucker, Marlon Wayans, and Chris Messina. The film is written by Alex Convery.
Affleck, the filmmaker, hasn’t directed a film since 2016’s “Live by Night,” which was one hot mess of a gangster movie. Before that misfire, Affleck had directed a handful of critically-acclaimed films such as “Argo,” “The Town,” and “Gone Baby Gone.”
This is Damon and Affleck’s fourth collaboration together after their Oscar-winning work in “Good Will Hunting,” and 2021’s “The Last Duel.” It’s unclear when exactly “Air” will arrive on Prime Video, but what we do know is that “Air” will debut in theaters on April 5.
