Remember that Michael Keaton-directed western, “Rode To Ruin,” announced a few days ago? It was set to star Keaton and Morgan Freeman in what sounded very old-school. Well, Angel Studios has just picked it up for US distribution and will be selling international rights at the upcoming TIFF market.
The movie, which is due to release in 2027, is described as “a haunting Western thriller that follows a retired U.S. Marshal whose forty-year search for his wife’s killer leads him to an aging outlaw losing his memory – and to a buried truth neither man may survive.”
Keaton and Freeman are reuniting on-screen for the first time in almost 40 years—they both starred in 1988’s “Clean and Sober.” Keaton recently directed two features, “Knox Goes Away” and “The Merry Gentleman.” It’s also great to see Freeman, impactfully memorable in “Unforgiven,” tackling the Western genre on the big screen again.
Angel Studios, whose core audience has largely been conservative, Christian, and family-oriented viewers, did great business on titles like “Sound of Freedom,” “Homestead,” and “The Chosen.” This summer, they released “Young Washington,” a unabashed patriotic take on George Washington, marketed primarily to a conservative and faith-adjacent audience, and it did decently well with a $47M gross.
