It’s crunch time for James Bond as we enter the final phase of the casting process, ahead of a very busy 2027 for all involved.
Here’s Richard Osman, producer and author, and very much in-the-know, telling The Rest is Entertainment podcast that Jack Lowden is heavily in the running to be the next James Bond and that he’s being “strongly considered.”
“The name I’ve heard is Jack Lowden,” Osman stated. It is definitively not a ‘he’s definitely got it’ thing. He is definitely being strongly considered. I think he’d be amazing.”
This would mean that Lowden has made it through to the next round, alongside Jacob Elordi, and will be auditioning this month for the role. No word yet on who the other candidates are, but there is said to be 5–6 finalists — all white, by the way.
Lowden, a Scottish actor with a growing international profile, is best known for “Slow Horses” and, to me, for his starring role in Terence Davies’ “Benediction.” His varied résumé includes “Wolf Hall,” Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk,” and “Mary Queen of Scots.” Later this year, he’ll play Mr. Darcy in Netflix’s new “Pride & Prejudice” adaptation.
Bond producer Amy Pascal recently stated that we would likely get an announcement about who the next Bond will be before the end of the year. They are aiming to start shooting next year. Meanwhile, Puck’s Matt Belloni reported that Amazon/MGM will release the next instalment in 2028.
Several studio executives told Page Six that Amazon/MGM is reportedly looking for an actor who can carry the franchise across five films, much like Daniel Craig did during his 15-year 007 run, which began in 2006.
Villeneuve was hired to direct and brought on writer Steven Knight (“Peaky Blinders”) to shape the script, which, according to the latest report in June, was still being written. Behind the scenes, casting efforts have been building for months. Pascal and David Heyman were brought on in spring 2025, while casting director Nina Gold was meeting with both “emerging and lesser-known actors” to help refine the broader candidate list.
This could mean that Lowden has made it through to the next round, alongside Jacob Elordi, and will be auditioning this month for the role. No word yet on who the other candidates are.
