We’re all eagerly anticipating Martin Scorsese’s next film—any new release from the American master is a major event, and his latest may carry a level of personal significance unlike anything he has made before.
In an interview on the Zach Sang Show podcast, Francesca Scorsese says she “burst into tears” after reading the script for Martin Scorsese’s “What Happens at Night,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence:
It’s about a husband and a dying wife. This one is really personal… sort of [grief] that he’s trying to explore. Because we’re kind of greiving and mourning my mom while she’s still here.
Scorsese’s wife, Helen Morris, has been living with Parkinson’s disease for over 30 years. Francesca admits reading the script, with Martin by her side, and being overcome by emotion:
And then when we finished reading it I just, like, burst into tears because I was like this is you dealing with this now.
“What Happens at Night,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence, is described as a “dream-like story” involving a married American couple who travel to a small, snowy European town to adopt a baby. While staying in a nearly deserted hotel filled with enigmatic figures—a flamboyant singer, a corrupt businessman, and a magnetic faith healer—they confront a strange world that challenges both their marriage and their sense of reality.
The wife, played by Lawrence, is dying—she has advanced cancer. The couple’s trip to adopt a baby is partly driven by her wish to give her husband a child before she dies. The story uses her illness not just as a plot point, but as a way to explore love, fear, grief, marriage, and what people hold onto when facing loss.
Given Francesca’s comments and the parallels to Helen Morris’s long battle with Parkinson’s, “What Happens at Night” could be Scorsese’s most personal film—possibly his most intimate exploration of love, mortality, and grief. Other films that have been viewed as deeply personal works from Scorsese include “Mean Streets,” and “Silence,” which reflected on his lifelong spiritual questions.
Alongside DiCaprio and Lawrence, some of the actors involved in “What Happens at Night” include Mads Mikkelsen, Patricia Clarkson, Jared Harris, Louis Cancelmi, Ilinca Manolache, and Gabriel Spahiu.
The Apple-produced project is based on Peter Cameron’s novel of the same name, with the screenplay adapted by Patrick Marber (“Closer”). No release date has been announced yet, and I suspect it will be aiming for a Cannes 2027 debut.
