They’re still trying to make this happen. A “Clueless” sequel, with Alicia Silverstone attached to star, dropped by Peacock, has now been picked up and greenlit by Paramount+ as a limited series.
This project has been in development for seven years, with lots of back-and-forth and tons of hesitation, but filming is finally slated to begin in Los Angeles in 2027.
The synopsis: “Picking up 30 years after the original film, beloved Beverly Hills icon Cher Horowitz (Silverstone) has figured out a lot: She’s successful in business and has mastered motherhood — that is, until her daughter’s high school years, when Cher finds that parenting a teenager makes her feel “clueless” all over again.”
The sequel is written and executive produced by the “Gossip Girl” duo of Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage of “Fake Empire,” along with “Dollface” creator Jordan Weiss.
Silverstone is set to reprise her signature role as Cher, made iconic in Amy Heckerling’s “Clueless,” released in 1995. That film left a lasting legacy as a cultural touchstone that redefined teen comedies and influenced fashion — and especially language — in the ’90s.
Loosely based on Jane Austen’s “Emma,” the film cleverly translated the novel’s classic themes into a vibrant, satirical portrait of 1990s Beverly Hills youth. It featured a sharp script led by Heckerling (where has she been?) and Silverstone’s standout performance, both of which inspired a wave of teen-centered films that followed, almost none as smartly delivered as this one.
“Clueless” made $88M against a $12M budget, but its lasting legacy was truly built on home video, where it became a pop culture phenomenon.
