‘Dungeons & Dragons 2’ Has A Completed Script, But Budget Concerns Has Paramount Passing

Writer-director duo Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (“Game Night”) were recently given the keys to reboot Star Trek for Paramount. Yet it seems one IP they won’t be tackling again is a sequel to “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.”

During San Diego Comic-Con, the topic of a sequel to ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ came up, and apparently, they wrote the script. It’s ready, but they doubt it will ever happen due to budget concerns (via ScreenRant).

“They’re expensive movies to make, but it’d be great fun to do it… We actually wrote a sequel to ‘Dungeons & Dragons.’ We were hired to write it. I don’t know that it will see the light of day for a number of financial reasons. They’re expensive movies to make, but it’d be great fun to do it. We love that cast, and we think we wrote something that fans would like.”

‘Honor Among Thieves’ did gain a decent following on streaming, and there has been demand for a sequel, but it would still be risky to greenlight a sequel to a film that didn’t do all that well in theaters.

Now, despite strong reviews — 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, a 72 Metacritic score, and strong audience ratings — the first instalment was not a commercial hit. The film grossed only $205M against a $150M budget, losing Paramount a significant amount of money.

‘Honor Among Thieves’ starred Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Regé-Jean Page, and Sophia Lillis. It was a surprisingly solid film, but with lukewarm box-office numbers, it’s not that surprising to see Paramount taking a hard pass on a sequel.

That said, Paramount was clearly impressed by Goldstein and Daley’s work on the film — so much so that they were given the immense task of rebooting Star Trek. Their Skydance connections continue, as their next film, “Mayday,” which was shot in 2024, will finally be released this September.
