Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” has leaked in HD on X. I came across a handful of posts containing the entire film. The leak comes as a surprise, given Nolan’s reputation for maintaining exceptionally tight security around the handling and distribution of his films, particularly when it comes to digital copies.
I wonder how difficult it’ll be for Universal to track down the leaker. Internally, I doubt many people had access to digital copies of the film. Then again, the leak could just as easily have come from an employee at one of the thousands of theaters showing it.
Now, many of the posts containing the leaked film have been taken down on X, but the damage has already been done — the most popular one got over 2M views. The film will likely become widely available through the usual channels that distribute pirated content. This comes after the film has been playing in theaters for only 10 days.
Regardless, I don’t believe this will have any meaningful impact on the box office for “The Odyssey.” The prevailing narrative is that the best way to experience the film is on the big screen—the largest screen you can find, preferably IMAX 70mm. Still, Universal can’t be happy about this.
