This is quite the surprising development, especially with Taika Waititi already having so many projects currently in the works. After years of speculation, a sequel to Waititi’s 2014 vampire cult comedy “What We Do in the Shadows” appears to be moving forward.
Waititi, alongside fellow co-creator and star Jemaine Clement, has long discussed a follow-up film, “We’re Wolves,” which would shift the focus to the werewolf pack led by Rhys Darby’s Anton.
While attending the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Clement revealed to Collider that active work on the script recently began after years of conversations and planning.
We’re writing it, actually. We started writing. For a long time, we were just talking about it. Now, we’ve started it. Very recently… When we get together, we do some work on it.
The original “What We Do in the Shadows” was made on a $1 million budget and was largely improvised, an approach that helped define its style. An acclaimed FX television adaptation followed, successfully airing for six seasons before concluding in 2024.
Clement suggested that the screenplay would likely be completed in 2027, adding that collaboration is much easier now that he and Waititi live in the same country.
For the time being, Waititi has his much-delayed “Klara and the Sun” eyeing a fall release. He also has a handful of other projects in development, including an adaptation of “Barn 8,” a “Star Wars” film, a live-action remake of “Flash Gordon,” “The Incal,” and “James.”
