This weekend at the box office will be all about “Spider-Man: Brand New,” which just became the fastest movie to cross $500M domestic ever, doing so in seven days and beating “Avengers: Endgame,” which did it in eight.
“Brand New Day” grossed $29M on Thursday, putting its total at $511M. It’s projected to earn another $155M from Friday-Sunday, which would break another record: that of the biggest second weekend ever. The worldwide tally is around $1.3 billion.
It’s no longer a question of if ‘Brand New Day’ will hit the $2 billion mark, but when. I’d say it could happen very soon, perhaps even as early as the following weekend, given how quickly it’s steamrolling through the all-time charts. But can it surpass “Avatar” and its $2.9B worldwide haul? That’ll be a much tougher record to break and will require some seriously strong legs.
As for Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” it made $7M yesterday in US theaters, and has just surpassed the $1 billion mark worldwide. Another strong weekend hold lies ahead for the film, which is now very close to crossing $500M domestically.
Rival studios are hoping for counterprogramming this weekend, as there are three relatively small wide releases. First up is the Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro romcom “One Night Only,” which only made $750K on Thursday. Counting Monday’s secret screenings, it is now at $1.3M. Its weekend should result in an $8-9M tally across 3,000+ screens. Of course, that’s not good, but we expected this to happen, and that 47% on Rotten Tomatoes sure didn’t help.
Also opening this weekend is “Super Troopers 3.” Yes, they are still making these. The film actually managed to get booked in 2760 theaters nationwide. The Thursday tally was around $350K. The last one, “Super Troopers 2,” which was crowd-funded, actually surprised many with a $15M opening. “Super Troopers 3” won’t come close to that, as it’s looking to open in the $6M range.
And finally, last but certainly not least, we have Eli Roth’s self-produced “Ice Cream Man” at 1671 theaters. The film was only budgeted at around $6M and is looking to open with a weak $3M weekend. No previews were reported. The film was trashed by critics, with a 29% on Rotten Tomatoes.
