What has been the release strategy from A24 for Michael Sarnoski’s “The Death of Robin Hood”? The film releases a week from now, and we’ve barely noticed it.
Compared to other A24 releases, the marketing so far can be described as restrained. Of course, the film isn’t meant to be a major cultural event, but it’s supposed to be getting a wide release. The film will likely have to rely on strong reviews to connect with audiences, but it’s certainly not off to a strong start in that regard either.
The premiere for “The Death of Robin Hood” was last night in New York during the NBA Finals, but this time around, not every journalist invited took the bait and posted glowing reactions on social media. So far, reactions appear to be mixed.
I’m told the budget for the film is around $25M, but tracking has not been strong, and it comes out the same weekend as “Toy Story 5,” which is estimated to have a $150M domestic opening.
Hugh Jackman, Jodie Comer, and Bill Skarsgård star in “The Death of Robin Hood,” a dark reimagining of the classic tale of Robin Hood. The film follows the title character as he grapples with his past after a life of crime and violence—a battle-worn loner who finds himself gravely injured and in the care of a mysterious woman who offers him a chance at salvation.
This also marks Sarnoski coming off his previous effort, 2024’s “A Quiet Place: Day One,” his sophomore outing. His debut, 2021’s “Pig,” was an acclaimed pandemic-era indie starring Nicolas Cage. A24 recently hired Sarnoski to direct their “Death Stranding” movie adaptation, which may shoot next year.
“The Death of Robin Hood” hits theaters on June 19 via A24. I’m supposed to see it on Monday morning.
