Joseph Gordon-Levitt has started production on his next directorial effort, which is technically still untitled, but casting grids have been using the name “2034.” Filming will take place in Serbia and Montenegro between May and July.
Furthermore, the main cast, which already included Rachel McAdams, has been rounded out with the additions of Jeff Daniels, Joel Edgerton, Caleb McLaughlin, and Nnamdi Asomugha.
Last October, Netflix landed the film after a heated multi-studio bidding war. Rian Johnson’s T-Street Productions is also backing it. Gordon-Levitt co-wrote the script for “2034” with Kieran Fitzgerald (“Snowden”), and Natasha Lyonne (“His Three Daughters”) shares a story credit.
No word yet on plot details, but the film is described as a direct exploration of artificial intelligence, portraying it in a “negative light.” Set in the near future, the film takes the form of a “gritty narrative” about how AI threatens to disrupt both society and creative labor.
This is set to be Gordon-Levitt’s sophomore effort as a director, coming more than 13 years after the release of “Don Jon.” Remember that one? He played a porn addict in that film, and Scarlett Johansson was the new girlfriend who told him to stop — honestly, who in their right mind wouldn’t if she asked.
“Don Jon” grossed $40 million at the box office and earned positive reviews. He followed that with the underseen Apple TV+ series “Mr. Corman,” which he wrote, directed, and also starred in as a San Fernando Valley public school teacher.
