Dominic Sessa, who gained attention for his lead turn in “The Holdovers,” is playing the late Anthony Bourdain in “Tony,” an upcoming film produced by A24.
A24 has released the first poster for “Tony,” suggesting a trailer may not be far behind. What’s most interesting, however, is the “in theaters this summer” stamp on the artwork, indicating the film is set for a summer rollout rather than a fall release. This is notable, since many believed it would be a cinch for a fall premiere, presumably at TIFF.
“Tony” has gone through multiple test screenings and more recently underwent reshoots. I gather a July/August release will be planned for the film.
Though plot specifics are still technically under wraps, “Tony” is said to take place in 1976, when a young Bourdain had a life-changing experience working and living in Provincetown, Mass. It follows Bourdain, the angsty aspiring writer, as he pursues a girl who eventually draws him into the culinary world.
“Tony” is directed by Matt Johnson, known for 2023’s acclaimed “BlackBerry.” The screenplay comes from Todd Bartel and Lou Howe. Emilia Jones, Antonio Banderas, Leo Woodall, Rich Sommer, and Stavros Halkias (!) are also part of the cast.
Johnson is a talented filmmaker, and “Tony” could very well be another strong entry for him — much like “BlackBerry” and this year’s “Nirvana the Band the Show the Movie.” Expect plenty of handheld camerawork and rapid zooms — his signature style.
Side note: What will be A24’s main push for awards season? Their slate looks fairly thin on contenders this year — though they may still pick something up at the major festivals. As it stands, they have Olivia Wilde’s “The Invite,” Lance Oppenheim’s “Primetime,” and Edward Berger’s “The Riders,” although it’s still unclear whether the latter will actually release this year.
