The ensemble keeps growing.
English actress Sadie Soverall (“Every Year After”), still relatively unknown, is being eyed for the lead role in “The Origin of the World,” sources tell Deadline. A September shoot is locked.
This means Soverall would be joining Cate Blanchett, Michael Fassbender, and Selena Gomez, all of whom have been previously reported as part of the cast. Expect more names to follow. Corbet had already hinted that it would be a sprawling ensemble, so he is clearly not done yet.
According to Corbet, “The Origin of the World” is “about American mysticism and the history of the occult in America,” though much of the project remains shrouded in mystery. The filmmaker had previously confirmed that he is working from an “X-rated” 200-page script that would run approximately four hours.
“The film spans from the 19th century into the present day — it’s just predominantly focused on the ’70s. The film is really, really genre-defying,” the director told THR.
To say his last film, The Brutalist, boosted Corbet’s career would be an understatement. Before that Oscar-winning feature, he had only directed two films (“Vox Lux,” “Childhood of a Leader”). Now he is a filmmaker whose every detail about his next project is being dissected and reported on.
I guess that’s what happens when you make an acclaimed film for under $10M that still feels epic at 3.5 hours, and somehow goes on to earn 10 Oscar nominations — including Best Director and Best Picture — and wins Adrien Brody his second acting award. Corbet has basically changed the way filmmaking can be done this decade.
