Disney needed someone to blame for “The Marvels,” the MCU’s most disastrous outing to date, and Nia DaCosta became the easy target. Right after the film cratered on opening weekend, stories conveniently emerged about her “inexperience” and supposed on-set detachment. Classic scapegoating.
Now, three years later, you have to give credit to DaCosta, who has directed two well-reviewed films in the span of just five months: “Hedda” and, of course, “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.” Her previous credits also include “Little Woods” and “Candyman.”
She has now lined up her next feature.
DaCosta is set to direct “Driver,” which will star Mahershala Ali. The film is currently being independently financed, without studio involvement for now, though it will likely attract buyers quickly.
Few plot details have emerged beyond Ali playing a hardened Nigerian smuggler who, after losing everything, accepts one last job transporting migrants across Africa while fleeing ruthless enemies.
“Driver” is eyeing a January 2027 production start in Spain and Morocco.
