Romain Gavras — the music-video provocateur turned filmmaker — is no stranger to bold, confrontational cinema. His “Athena” (2022), which premiered in competition at Venice, had one-take combustible energy, earning him both admirers and detractors.
Three years later, Gavras returned with “Sacrifice,” which had big names (Chris Evans, Anya Taylor Joy, Charli XCX) but this time the film didn’t make the cut for Venice. Instead, it landed at TIFF 2025 — and with a 27% on Rotten Tomatoes score, it was the festival’s worst-reviewed film of the gest.
Regardless, Gavras has now settled on his next film, and he’s going back to France to shoot it. Seven months after what French press described as the "the heist of the century" at the Louvre, Gavras has announced a film devoted to this topic (via Film Francais).
Gavras will adapt a book-investigation by Jean-Michel Décugis, Jérémie Pham-Lê and Nicolas-Charles Torrent, which is expected in bookstores at Flammarion editions on May 27. The book, promises "an exciting and ultra-sensitive dive" into the history of the heist that took place last year, based on "secret documents.”
On October 19, 2025, a group of thieves broke into the Louvre in broad daylight and stole eight pieces of French Crown Jewels worth around $100M. The operation took only a few minutes: the burglars used construction disguises and equipment to access the gallery, smashed display cases, and escaped quickly on scooters. The stolen jewels included historic items tied to figures like Empress Eugénie, and despite multiple arrests, the majority of the pieces have still not been recovered, making it one of the most high-profile museum thefts in recent years.
For the moment, the title of the film, the cast and the release date have not yet been announced by Gravas. According to Film Francais, it could shoot next year and be ready for 2028.
