Jonah Hill’s ‘Outcome’ Lands With a Thud: Apple-Produced Dark Comedy Scores 35 on Metacritic, 20% on Rotten Tomatoes

April 9, 2026 Jordan Ruimy

Jonah Hill returns to the director’s chair with the Hollywood-set dark comedy “Outcome,” which is being produced by Apple Original Films. The film was shot in early 2024 and has had some delays since then.

“Outcome,” which is being released directly to streaming on Friday, has had its review embargo lifted, and things aren’t looking good at the moment: 35 on Metacritic and 20% on Rotten Tomatoes. No wonder this won’t be getting a theatrical rollout. The trailer, which was not good, featured what looked to be a miscast Keanu Reeves and an unrecognizable Jonah Hill.

The film, which deals with “cancel culture,” focuses on Reef (Reeves), described by his friends Kyle (Cameron Diaz) and Xander (Matt Bomer) as “for the last four decades, America’s favorite movie star,” with roles in “three of the biggest franchises in film history.” He is preparing a comeback after a five-year break. However, he is extorted with a mysterious video that has the potential to destroy his career.

Hill last directed the 2018 skateboard drama “Mid90s” for A24. It garnered strong reviews, and I found the film to be a slight but wholly authentic coming-of-age story — a solid debut. He followed that up with a self-therapy doc, “Stultz,” produced by Netflix. He’ll soon try to get rid of the stink from “Outcome,” as he has another film he directed, “Cut Off,” set to hit theaters in July. However, there has been zero promotion for it so far, and it could very well be delayed by Warner Bros. to next year.
