Fandango recently surveyed more than 6,000 movie ticket buyers to find out which films they’re most excited to see this upcoming summer — and the results emphasize audience preference for IP.
Topping the list is “Toy Story 5,” proving that Pixar’s animated series continues to resonate across generations. The last film was released seven years ago, so no worries about market saturation there.
Right behind it is what I expected to top the list: “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” There’s superhero fatigue, and then there’s Marvel’s most popular character. The last film earned $1.9 billion during the pandemic, and this one will at the very least hit the billion-dollar mark.
Several sequels also made the list: “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” “Scary Movie 6,” “Mortal Kombat 2,” “Minions & Monsters,” and “Insidious 6.”
The only original? Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” which is actually based on classic source material but is the kind of non-IP, epic, large-scale film that rarely gets made these days. Nolan is one of the very few filmmakers out there who can make blockbusters on name recognition alone.
What’s missing? “The Mandalorian and Grogu.” Has Star Wars run its course? We’ll find out in May. No Steven Spielberg either — “Disclosure Day” is the only other original that stood a chance at cracking this list, but it didn’t. Did audiences feel underwhelmed by the trailer? No “Masters of the Universe” either, but that was to be expected.
