I’m hearing a lot of interesting buzz about the Cannes lineup right now—lots of surprises. I’ll have a write-up on that in the next hour or two.
In the meantime, a sequel has just been announced, and it’s arguably one of the most unexpected follow-ups in recent memory. Remember “Troop Beverly Hills”? The 1989 comedy starring Shelley Long and directed by Jeff Kanew? Well, it’s getting a sequel—starring Cameron Diaz and directed by Clea DuVall.
Random? Absolutely. However, TriStar Pictures clearly thinks it’s a good idea—they’ve officially greenlit the project. Plot details are still under wraps, but fans of the original will recall that it centered on Long’s character, a pampered Beverly Hills housewife who sets out to prove to her daughter that she can handle life as a Wilderness Girls troop leader.
Why a sequel now? That’s the question everyone is asking. It’s obviously being set up as a star vehicle for Diaz. Whatever the reason, this is one of the more baffling sequel ideas in recent memory.
The sequel will arrive more than 20 years after the original and nearly two decades after “National Treasure: Book of Secrets,” with Turteltaub returning to direct.
