Macon Blair’s ‘The Sh*theads’ Gets Retitled ‘Idiots,’ Sets Summer Release Date

April 7, 2026 Jordan Ruimy

The Dave Franco, O’Shea Jackson Jr., and Peter Dinklage–led film formerly known as “The Sh*theads” has been given a new title ahead of its theatrical debut. Could anyone have expected it to keep its original name? A similar switch happened last year with “Blink Twice,” originally titled “Pussy Island,” which infamously upset director Zoe Kravitz.

With that in mind, IFC has announced that Macon Blair’s road trip comedy will be released under the simple title “Idiots.” An August 28 theatrical launch has been stamped for the film, which premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival. Reviews were decent; the film sits at 67 on Metacritic and 73% on Rotten Tomatoes.

“Idiots” centers on Mark (Franco) and Davis (Jackson), a pair of wayward young men whose questionable judgment and mischievous antics lead them into a series of unpredictable situations. The duo is tasked with escorting a wealthy teenager (Mason Thames) to a rehabilitation facility, setting the stage for chaos and revelation.

Blair, one of Jeremy Saulnier’s earliest go-to actors, directed the 2017 Sundance winner “I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore,” and his sophomore effort, “The Toxic Avenger,” was finally released late last year after many delays. “Idiots” is set to be his third — and most accessible? — film.
