Warner Bros Sets Two Zach Cregger Movies for 2028, Including Sci-Fi ‘The Flood’ and ‘Weapons’ Spin-Off ‘Gladys’

April 14, 2026 Jordan Ruimy

If you’re a Zach Cregger fan, then this evening brings a lot of good news to whet your appetite … Warner Bros. has announced two Cregger movies, both written by him and both set for 2028, but only one he will direct.

Firstly, there’s the much-talked-about “Gladys,” a “Weapons” spin-off exploring Amy Madigan’s Aunt Gladys, which has been dated for September 8, 2028. Zach Shields (‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’) co-wrote the screenplay for the film, which Cregger is not directing. No replacement has been announced—though perhaps it will be Shields?

Meanwhile, “The Flood.” This is the sci-fi project I reported on a few weeks back as Cregger’s next film. It has been dated for August 11, 2028. Surprisingly, Warner Bros. has taken over, set to produce and distribute the project.

Last year, we had a report that Cregger—coming off the immense success of “Weapons”—had his mysterious sci-fi horror film, “The Flood,” hit a wall at Netflix. The hold-up? Cregger reportedly wanted the film to land in theaters first, and the streamer wasn’t budging. Last month, I gave an update: Cregger really wanted to fast-track this one as his next film, and he was in talks with Netflix to potentially secure some type of theatrical rollout for it.

Those plans clearly failed. “The Flood” is now at New Line/Warner Bros. That’s Netflix loss. How many filmmakers is that now that they’ve failed to secure due to their stringent anti-theatrical stance?

Regardless, “The Flood” sounds great. The story follows a deep-space exploration team aboard the Spiritus Mundi, who pick up a strange, recurring signal from a remote planet. Captain Elena Voss leads the mission to investigate, only to discover a bizarre alien artifact that begins warping time, reality, and the crew’s minds.

For now, and after the success of “Barbarian” and “Weapons,” Cregger has his “Resident Evil” reboot up next, set for release in September 2026. In fact, Sony paid him $20M to helm the film, and gave the him full creative control to do whatever he wanted with the IP. The bar has now been set high, and Warner Bros. will likely have to offer Cregger a similar deal for “The Flood.”
