UPDATE: Confirmed! Blanchett is playing M-Stew. We also have a director attached, none other than Janicza Bravo, who helmed the highly stylized, and entertaining, “Zola,” released in 2020.
EARLIER:,Wait, what did Martha Stewart just say? In an interview with Variety, Stewart confirmed there’s a biopic about her in the works, titled “Good Thing,” and that Cate Blanchett is supposed to play her. Who’s directing? This is the first we’re hearing of the project.
Stewart is a media mogul who built an empire around cooking and home design — she defined lifestyle authority via magazines, television, and bestselling books. In the 2000s, she was convicted and served five months in prison for insider trading, after which she somehow staged a successful comeback, expanding her media empire and becoming besties with Snoop Dogg.
Cate Blanchett, a two-time Oscar winner (“The Aviator,” “Blue Jasmine”), seems like a natural choice to play Stewart. She was last seen on the big screen in Jim Jarmusch’s “Father Mother Sister Brother” and has upcoming projects, including the Zellner brothers’ “Alpha Gang” and Alice Birch’s “Sweetsick,” both potentially set to release later this year.
